Harley Davidson Sidecar - Different Names
A sidecar (also known as an outfit, rig, hack or combination) is single-wheeled piece of equipment attached to the side of a motorcycle or bicycle. Used to carry a passenger or transport goods/equipment, the sidecar was used by many different Companies throughout the 1900’s and some still make and produce them today. There are several different designs and these have developed and improved over the past 100 years.

Harley Davidson Sidecar - Introduced in 1914
The Harley Davidson sidecar was introduced in 1914 and said to have been quite profitable for decades. However, popularity and orders for the Harley Davidson sidecar withered in past years and failing to make it to its 100 anniversary, it was announced in mid 2010 that Harley Davidson would be discontinuing the Harley Davidson sidecar in 2011 (following a decline in demand). Harley Davidson has said that they will continue to provide warranty service and stock replacement parts at their dealerships for sidecars bought in previous years.

Harley Davidson Sidecar - Not A Trike
The difference between a Harley Davidson sidecar and a Harley Davidson trike is that the rear wheels of a trike use the same axle and sit either side of the motorcycle (both wheels are therefore powered by the same axle) - so it looks to have the rear wheels of a car, stuck on the back of a motorcycle. Although the sidecar has the same amount of wheels (three) - the actual sidecar mechanism is attached to the side of the motorcycle and is powered by the one single wheel of the motorcycle.

Harley Davidson Sidecar - Racing Achievements
What with cars being affordable, and motorcycles having the capacity to carry passengers comfortably on the back of their bike, the sidecar is less likely to be seen these days. They can be seen at racing events though, as sidecars are still being used to race today (Isle of Man TT). One racing piece of history is that a Harley Davidson sidecar was recorded to have won the first annual Pike’s Peak race in 1916 (an annual race in Colorado) and also the Australian Adelaide to Melbourne race in 1922.
